Georgetown Water Purification Plant
GEORGETOWN WATER PURIFICATION PLANT
client: Regional Municipality of Halton
location: Town of Halton Hills (Georgetown)
project description:
R.V. Anderson Associates Limited (RVA) was originally retained by XCG Consultants Ltd. to assist with the Class EA, and to develop a preliminary design for a manganese removal process for the existing Georgetown Water Purification Plant. Subsequently, RVA was retained directly by the Region of Halton for final design, contract administration, and site inspection services. The final product was a state of the art 8640 m³ /day treatment facility, designed to treat the groundwater supply using the "catalytic greensand" process, as well as to disinfect the treated water with ultra violet light reactors. Two new filters were constructed on top of an existing water reservoir. By eliminating the ground cover on the reservoir, spreading out the weight of the new filters with a steel beam assembly, and by using light-weight construction materials, the new work was constructed without increasing structural loadings on the existing columns and footings.
Two UV reactors (duty and stand-by) provide 100% redundancy. Three new variable speed filter supply pumps were installed in a new pump well constructed within the existing reservoir, and the treated water was discharged to the remainder of the existing reservoir. This approach led to a minimum of disruption to the existing treatment facility, and also allowed an architectural approach that minimized impacts to the surrounding park area. The use of the catalytic greensand process meant that no new chemicals were required. Backwash wastewater was disposed of to a holding tank where it slowly drained by gravity to a sanitary sewer.
