Deep Lake Cooling Pre-Engineering Study
DEEP LAKE COOLING PRE-ENGINEERING STUDY
client: City of Toronto and Enwave District Energy Limited (Enwave)
location: Toronto, Ontario
project description:
R.V. Anderson Associates Limited was commissioned by Enwave and the City of Toronto to investigate the possibility of providing cool water from Lake Ontario, to be used to cool the office towers and other large buildings in Downtown Toronto. The project involved existing City of Toronto treatment and pumping facilities such as the Island Filtration Plant and the John Street Pumping Station.
A pre-engineering investigation and a Report were prepared for a new Deep Lake Water Cooling intake at a depth of 85 m for the existing Island Filtration Plant. After assessing several options, the two solutions proposed for the intake were a 7.5 km long tunnel via the Leslie Street Spit, and the 5.8 km long, 3-parallel polyethylene pipe intakes.
Other aspects of the study included sampling and analysis for water quality, cooling loads demand assessment and profiles, checking of existing facilities capacities, coordination of operation of the Deep Lake Water Cooling system and the Toronto water supply system, energy transfer loop between the John Street Pumping Station and the Enwave plant, preparation of various operational response scenarios, property issues, contingency planning and life cycle cost estimates.
