Port Dalhousie Water Pollution Plant Upgrade
PORT DALHOUSIE WATER POLLUTION CONTROL PLANT UPGRADE
client: Regional Municipality of Niagara
location: St. Catharines, Ontario
project description:
R.V. Anderson Associates Limited (RVA) work at the Port Dalhousie WPCP included the design and contract supervision for a plant upgrade to 61,000 m³ /d, which provided a storm bypass treatment facility utilizing physical treatment and disinfection, refurbishment of existing primary clarifiers from traveling bridge to chain and flight collectors, digester facility modifications including CGA upgrades, installation of draft tube mixers on the plant's primary digesters, the installation of an egg shaped primary digester; the construction of a new bulk sludge loading facility; boiler upgrades; the construction of a new chlorination and dechlorination facility with an emergency gas scrubber system, and SCADA system upgrades.
The new egg digester, which improves the performance of the plant on the solids stream, provides better solids mixing and operates at approximately 1/4 of the energy of the two existing conventional digesters. The vessel, with a total volume of 2,000 m³ was the first "true" egg-shaped digester in Canada. RVA worked closely with Regional engineering and plant operation staff throughout the design and contract administration, to ensure that the concerns and expectations of the upgrade would be met.
project status:
The project was completed on time and within a budget of approximately $9,567,000 million over 2 1/2 years.
