| YORK UNIVERSITY - COMPUTER SCIENCE BUILDING |
client: York University
location: Toronto, Ontario
project description:
R.V. Anderson Associates Limited was retained to design and administer the construction of the site services and grading for the three-story 102,000 ft² Computer Science Building at York University's York Campus. Innovative site grading and stormwater management practices were required, such as "green" roofs, surface storage and underground storage to redirect the existing overland drainage route around the site and prevent storm sewers from surcharging. Fire hydrant flow tests and a water distribution analysis were also conducted to ensure sufficient water flow is available for fire protection of the proposed building.
benefit to client:
In addition to the stormwater management benefits, the green roof also provides additional sound and temperature insulation, and prolongs the life span of the roof membrane. The green roof was part of several sustainable design principles implemented, resulting in an award winning building that consumes 50% less energy than an equivalent standard building. |

Sustainable Technologies Evaluation Program (STEP) Evaluation of an Extensive Greenroof - York University, Toronto, Ontario. This study provides results from a three year monitoring evaluation of the stormwater management and biodiversity benefits of an extensive greenroof. Study components include water quantity, water quality, substrate chemistry, flora, fauna and a general discussion of maintenance issues. A brief literature review sets the context for the study.
