client: Regional Municipality of York
location: Town of Aurora
project description:
R.V. Anderson Associates Limited was retained to undertake the design for the reconstruction and widening of St. John's Sideroad between Yonge Street and Bayview Avenue. The project included:
- widening to a four lane arterial roadway
- new storm sewer system with mitigating measures at the environmentally sensitive McKenzie Marsh area
- 450 mm diameter water main including jack and bore under the railway tracks
- new traffic signals at two locations and street lighting throughout the project
- stakeholder communications and public information center
- all required agency approvals
St. John's Sideroad traverses the McKenzie Marsh, a highly sensitive environmental area. During the Environmental Assessment Study undertaken by others, numerous stakeholders raised concerns about the impact of the road widening on the marsh area. In order to minimize impacts, retaining walls were designed to contain the road widening through the marsh. Numerous discussions were held with stakeholders during the design to resolve any outstanding concerns.
The project also included full depth reclamation of the existing granular and asphalt pavement materials in the easterly section of the project. A life cycle analysis showed that full depth reclamation was preferred over other options such as complete reconstruction or resurfacing. |
