Salem Road Reconstruction and Widening
SALEM ROAD RECONSTRUCTION AND WIDENING
client: Region of Durham
location: Town of Ajax, Ontario
project description:
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation, the Region of Durham and the Town of Ajax determined that a new interchange on Highway 401 at Pickering Beach Road (renamed Salem Road) would best accommodate growth requirements of the municipality and widening requirements for Highway 401. The three parties entered into a cost sharing agreement to construct the interchange. The Region of Durham was mandated to make road improvements to Salem Road to accommodate the increased traffic volumes.
The Region retained R.V. Anderson Associates Limited (RVA) to undertake the preliminary and detail design, prepare displays and presentation for a Public Information Centre, and write a Preliminary Design Report for the widening of Salem Road from the new Highway 401 interchange to Highway 2.
The project included design of a seven-lane cross-section, with initial construction of five lanes, including noise attenuation walls, grading and drainage. RVA coordinated contributions from the traffic signal designer (on Region staff), the landscape designer (on Town of Ajax staff) and the illumination designer (retained by the Region) and completed the shop drawing review for the selected noise wall to allow preparation of a single tender documents package.
project status:
The Highway 401/Salem Road interchange is now opened. Salem Road between Highway 401 and Highway 2 was ready to accommodate the increased traffic volumes.
