York Street Tunnel
YORK STREET TUNNEL
client: Toronto District Heating Corporation
location: Toronto, Ontario
project description:
R.V. Anderson Associates Limited (RVA) was retained by the Toronto District Heating Corporation (TDHC) to do a preliminary investigation (complete with feasibility report) final design and services during construction for a phase of the chilled water distribution network stretching along York St., between Bremner Blvd and Piper St. RVA completed the design and obtained all necessary approvals in 1998, The site, typical for downtown Toronto, is highly congested with numerous underground utilities and services. In order to obtain the best possible price for the owner, the design provided two alternatives for the contractor to bid on: a combination of "open/cut tunnel" alternative with three (3) shafts and an "all tunnel" alternative with two (2) shafts. The construction choice was for the "all tunnel" option. Two (2) -1200 mm diameter pressure pipes were installed one on top of the other in a "horseshoe shaped" tunnel cross section which was sealed with concrete grout after the pipe installation. The two (2) -1200 mm diameter chilled water supply and return pipes are part of the grand "Deep Lake Water Cooling" concept that will provide 52,000 tons of refrigeration or approximately 1/4 of the cooling load required to cool downtown buildings.
project status:
Project completed for a construction cost of $3.2 million.
