R.V. Anderson Associates Limited was retained for the design of site utilities, landscape, support concession buildings and gravity base tower foundation for Paramount Canada's Wonderland's new "Drop Zone," a vertical steel tower offering passengers the experience of a "real" free fall. The "Giant Drop tower" consists of five steel tube sections of 2.2 m (7.2 ft.) in diameter with a total height of 69 m (227 ft.) above ground level. Five Ride Modules each holding four passengers are guided vertically on the outside of the steel tower structure and pulled to the top by powerful electric winches. The passenger module vehicles are guided by rails secured to the tower at the back of the vehicles. After of 2-3 second view of the entire park from the top of the tower, occupants 'free fall' 39 m (129 ft.), experiencing a deceleration of 3g - 4g, through the braking zone where they are slowed by a series of fail-safe magnetic brakes and hydraulic buffers. |
