R.V. Anderson Associates Limited was retained to design and carry out field service for the connecting tunnels that connected the existing sewers to the Combined Sewage Overflow tank between Main and King Streets, and Highway 403 in Hamilton, Ontario. The tunnels consisted of 2 - 3300 mm diameter bores and 90 m under Highway 403 east ramp, with a finished inside diameter of 2400mm and 1-2100mm diameter bore x 110 m across Highway 403, with 3.00m cover, finished inside diameter 1350mm. The tunnels were bored in soft ground, with steel rib and timber lagging primary lining. Concrete pressure pipe was installed in the tunnels and the annular pace between the lagging and the pipe was pressure grouted. The project included construction of a 15m deep access shaft in a location congested with buried water mains, gas mains and a high voltage hydro transmission line.
