Staion Street Chilled Water System
STATION STREET CHILLED WATER SYSTEM
client: Enwave District Energy Limited
location: Toronto, Ontario
project description:
R.V. Anderson Associates Limited (RVA) was retained by Enwave District Energy Limited (Enwave), formally Toronto District Heating Corporation, to provide preliminary design, detailed design and construction services for a further phase of the chilled water distribution system. This phase extends west along Station Street from the existing system under York Street . RVA completed the design and obtained all necessary approvals. The alignment was along the privately owned Station Street and is located immediately adjacent to an existing building which contained the "Skywalk" between Union Station and the SkyDome. At one location, the alignment was deflected between an outside staircase and the edge of the building. Typical for downtown Toronto, the site is highly congested with numerous underground services. Although limited in space, the work site was kept open to traffic at all times. The project included 115 metres of twin 900 mm diameter pipes, one for chilled water supply and one for the return. Approximately 15 metres was constructed in deep tunnel to connect to the chilled water system under York Street. The remaining work was done using open cut methods. Two valve chambers were included, the second which provided a 300 mm diameter service connection to one of the buildings. This chamber was designed to permit future extension to the west. Subsequent to the start of construction, the western most chamber was relocated 16 metres to the west and completely re-designed to accommodate the construction of the foundations for a future building.
project status:
Project completed for a construction cost of $2.5 million.
