Mill Creek In-line Combined Sewer Overflow Control Facility
MILL CREEK IN-LINE COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOW CONTROL FACILITY
client: Corporation of the City of St. Thomas
location: St. Thomas, Ontario
project description:
R.V. Anderson Associates Limited (RVA) undertook the complete design of an in-line 4,000 m³ storage facility upstream of the St. Thomas Water Pollution Control Plant to provide capture of most wet weather flows and significantly reduce bypass events. Services included environmental assessment, preliminary design, detailed design and construction services. The final design consisted of a 280 m long concrete shaped base channel with precast arches, inlet and outlet chambers, motorized sluice gates throttled to the rated capacity of the treatment plant, and access provisions for inspection and maintenance.
During design investigations, the original twin sewer pipe design concept was replaced in favour of the shaped channel and precast arches because of improved flow characteristics, reduced maintenance and significantly less capital costs. Key aspects of the project included buoyancy control, flushing and self-cleansing, bedding and cover conditions, interception of existing tributary sewers and abandonment of an old existing sanitary sewer. With the assistance of local residents and naturalist groups, a portion of the site was restored using indigenous grasses and wild flower plantings.
project status:
The CSO was constructed at a cost $2.3 million dollars.
