Cyrville Road Water Main Replacement
CYRVILLE ROAD WATER MAIN REPLACEMENT
client: City of Ottawa
location: Ottawa, Ontario
project description:
In June 2001 a water main break occurred just north of the Cyrville Road Overpass in the Ministry of Transportation right-of-way for Highway 417. A spot repair was attempted but due to the corroded condition of the water main the repair could not be completed and the water main decommissioned. R.V. Anderson Associates Limited (RVA) was retained to undertake the assessment and develop a long term solution for the water main crossing. The assessment had to consider a number of key factors such as: the water main crossed a 6-lane divided Provincial Highway which could not be impacted; the water main crossed an environmentally sensitive creek; a high voltage overhead power line system ran immediately adjacent to the water main; steep banks existed at the edges of the Highway right-of-way; bedrock existed near existing ground surface; and access to the site is limited by the creek and Highway. Due to the location a conventional open-cut replacement method could not be used for much of the alignment. RVA prepared a Preliminary Design Report assessing various technologies including: CIP structural liners, rigid structural liners, pipe bursting, directional drilling, microtunneling, etc. The preferred solution was to slip line 140 m of 305 mm cast iron pipe with a 203 mm HDPE pipe to avoid impacts to both the highway and creek. The remaining 60 m was open cut. RVA prepared the detail drawings, specifications and provided contract administrative services and inspection for the water main rehabilitation/replacement project.
project status:
Project completed for a total construction cost of $125,000.00
